These books feature stories from the Bible and/or discussion questions for Bible reading. Some recount the stories more literally, whereas others add some extra details that may not be found in the biblical narrative itself.

Many other good hymnbooks can be used. Whatever hymnbook you use, make sure it is a from a doctrinally sound publisher.
You don't need to be an expert singer. In fact, if you memorized a lot of hymns growing up, you probably can sing them without any hymnbook at all!
For a sample of singable modern hymns, we recommend the music by the artists on these playlists:

Andrew Peterson is a family favourite. He is a singer-songwriter and an author.
Our church did a Group VBS called Shipwrecked in 2018, and we still love to listen to the songs. Their YouTube channel has lots of videos. (If you already know the song you are looking for, it may be easier to search for the songs by name rather than scroll through the list.)
We also enjoy the 2020 VBS theme, called Rocky Railway; the theme song is entitled Your Power Will Pull Us Through.
These excellent resources are intended to supplement, but not replace, regular Bible reading.
